IPC Section 132 (Mutiny Consequence) under the old Indian Penal Code 1860 is now covered under Section 160 of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, effective from 1 July 2024.
Abetment of mutiny, if mutiny is committed in consequence thereof
IPC 132 (Mutiny Consequence) — abetment of mutiny, if mutiny is committed in consequence thereof — now maps to BNS Section 160. Key change: No major change. Punishment under BNS 160: Same - Death or Life imprisonment.
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, in force since 1 July 2024, has replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860. IPC 132 (Mutiny Consequence) sits among the IPC's offences against the State and the armed forces — the group the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita redrew more heavily than almost any other. Renumbered as BNS 160, the conduct is recast around the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India, with the colonial sedition offence replaced by a distinct provision targeting acts that endanger the nation, so mutiny consequence must now be read through the new framework rather than the repealed IPC 132.
IPC 132 dealt with mutiny consequence — abetment of mutiny, if mutiny is committed in consequence thereof. Until 30 June 2024, every FIR and criminal trial for this offence was registered and prosecuted under this provision of the Indian Penal Code 1860.
No major change. From 1 July 2024, new complaints relating to mutiny consequence are filed under BNS Section 160, while cases registered earlier continue under the old IPC provision as per the saving clause of the BNS.

No. The Indian Penal Code 1860 was repealed and replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 on 1 July 2024. The mutiny consequence offence earlier in IPC 132 is now governed by BNS 160 — pending IPC 132 cases continue, but new FIRs cite BNS 160.
